The latest rankings by U.S. News & World Report list Yavapai County as among the nation’s 500 healthiest communities.

Coming in at 478, Yavapai’s ranking was based on factors including the economy, education, equity and community health. Nearly 3,000 counties were surveyed for the list. Yavapai also ranked 8th in the urban up-and-coming category for healthy behaviors and access to mental health care, among other things. The report also noted the average life expectancy in Yavapai County is nearly 79 years old.

The Rafael Fire burning southwest of Flagstaff has grown to 36,000 acres with no containment yet reported. It comes as a federal incident management team has assumed command amid continued extreme wildfire conditions. KNAU’s Ryan Heinsius reports.

  

  

Sedona Fire District

The lightning-caused Rafael Fire has so far burned more than 37 square miles with no containment reported, according to the most recent data from Coconino National Forest officials and InciWeb.

Multiple Flagstaff area communities remain in “SET” status for potential evacuation, including Kachina Village, University Heights, Mountain Dell, Pine Del,  Forest Highland, Woody Mountain Road south of I-40, Garland Prairie and Pine Aire Estates. Several ranches west of Sedona remain on mandated evacuation, according to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office.

Spanish is the second most commonly spoken language in the country next to English. In Arizona, translations can be found everywhere — from ATMs and voting materials, to signs at national parks.

 

But when it comes to information about the COVID-19 pandemic, multilingual resources haven’t always been readily available. Medical experts say unclear communication can lead to difficulties in receiving proper health care.

It’s Friday, June 11. A warming trend is set to continue this weekend, according to the National Weather Service. Excessive heat warnings will be in effect beginning Saturday and Sunday for communities including Prescott and Grand Canyon Village. Forecasters say temperatures could surpass 110º next week in lower elevation regions of Yavapai County.
