The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “Folktales” showing Aug. 1-7 at the Mary D. Fisher and Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatres.

In Oscar-nominated filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady’s life-affirming film, “Folktales”, teenagers converge at a traditional folk high school in Arctic Norway where they must rely on only themselves, one another, and a loyal pack of sled dogs as they all grow in unexpected directions.

In Norse mythology, the three “Norns” are powerful deities who weave the threads of fate and shape humans’ futures. Today, Pasvik Folk High School in northern Norway aims to produce a similar life-changing effect on its students.

“Folktales” tells the timely and heartwarming story of teenagers who choose to spend an unconventional “gap year” learning to dog sled and survive the Arctic wilderness, in hopes of finding connection and meaning in the modern world. Guided by patient teachers and a yard full of heroic Alaskan huskies, they discover their own potential and develop deep relationships with the land, animals and humans around them.

Through intimate verité storytelling and exhilarating cinematography, Ewing and Grady examine humans on the cusp of adulthood, finding themselves at the edge of the world.

“Folktales” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher and Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatres Aug. 1-7. Showtimes will be Friday and Saturday, Aug. 1 and 2 at 7:00 p.m.; Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 4, 5 and 6 at 4:00 p.m.; and Thursday, Aug. 7 at 6:30 p.m.

Bird enthusiasts join a naturalist for a guided walk appropriate for beginner and advanced birders. The Audubon Society has designated Red Rock State Park as part of the Lower Oak Creek Important Birding Area (IBA). Please meet up with the leader on the viewing deck above the visitor center.

This event, known as parkrun, takes place every Saturday morning - same time, same place, same 5K distance. Run, walk, jog, walk the dog, push the grandchildren in a stroller, or volunteer - this event is free, for everyone, forever. NACA Health Promotion invites you and your family to join us at some of our favorite Flagstaff hiking trails! The Spring into Summer Hiking Series runs from May until September and takes participants to some of the most scenic and picturesque locations Flagstaff and the surrounding areas have to offer. Hikes are scheduled monthly, on a Saturday, and range from 1.5 to 5 miles in length. These hikes appeal to new and seasoned hikers alike, and feature guest speakers and demonstrations each month

Pre-registration is encouraged, to hold your spot, but you can register the morning of the hike. Everyone is welcome to attend and explore! Drink plenty of water, wear sunblock, sunglasses, and a cap for added shade.

Every morning, a volunteer naturalist leads a guided nature walk informing visitors about the different life zones of Red Rock State Park. The subjects discussed on this walk may include geology, wildlife, history, archeology, and plant life. The naturalists welcome questions during the walk, enhancing the learning experience. This program is included with park entry fee.
